A Historic Landmark:

Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 7

Standing tall in Franklin, Tennessee, the National Historic Landmark, Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 7, boasts a rich and fascinating history. Established in 1809, the lodge itself is one of the oldest continuously operating Masonic lodges in the state.

The construction of the current Gothic Revival building, completed between 1823 and 1826, marked a significant moment. At the time, it stood as the first three-story structure west of the Allegheny Mountains. The building's architectural significance wasn't its only claim to fame. In 1830, it played a pivotal role in American history when it hosted negotiations between the Chickasaw Nation and a commission led by President Andrew Jackson. These negotiations resulted in the Treaty of Franklin, one of the first agreements signed following the controversial Indian Removal Act of 1830.

The building witnessed further historical moments during the Civil War. Occupied by both Confederate and Union troops, it suffered damage during the Battle of Franklin. Despite the destruction, the lodge was later restored.

Recognizing its architectural and historical importance, the Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 7 building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Today, the building continues to serve its original purpose as a meeting place for Hiram Lodge No. 7 and other Masonic organizations. It stands as a testament to the rich history of Franklin and a reminder of the significant events that transpired within its walls.

Make it Last

The preservation efforts for the Historic Franklin Masonic Hall have deep roots, dating back to its original construction in 1823, when the Tennessee Legislature authorized Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 7 to hold the first State Lottery to fund the building’s creation. Over the years, this iconic structure has weathered the passage of time, serving as a vital part of Franklin’s history. However, as the years took their toll on the building, it became clear that more substantial efforts were needed to preserve its legacy for future generations. Early restoration efforts began in the mid-20th century, with local Masons and community members rallying to maintain the Hall, but the growing need for a comprehensive preservation strategy led to the formation of a dedicated non-profit organization.

In 2023, recognizing the urgent need to protect and restore this historic landmark, the National Historic Hiram Masonic Lodge #7 Foundation was established. This 501(c)(3) organization was created by a group of passionate Masons, historians, and local citizens committed to safeguarding the Hall’s structural integrity and rich history. Since its formation, the Foundation has spearheaded numerous fundraising efforts, including corporate sponsorships and community events, to support ongoing restoration projects. The Foundation's mission is to ensure that the Historic Franklin Masonic Hall remains a beacon of history and community for generations to come.
